Helium balloons are a crowd favorite that everyone recognizes as bringing the party! From birthday parties to weddings, grand openings to graduations, they bring the party. There’s just something about a balloon hovering gracefully in the air that captures our imagination. So, what’s the secret behind those floating balloons? It all comes down to the gas inside.
For a balloon to float, the gas inside it must be lighter than the air outside. Air is made up of a mix of gases, primarily nitrogen and oxygen, which together have a certain density. To achieve lift, the gas inside a balloon must have a lower density than the surrounding air. That’s where helium and hydrogen come into play.
Helium is the star of the show when it comes to balloons. It’s a noble gas, meaning it’s non-reactive and safe to use. Helium is much lighter than air, so when a balloon is filled with it, the buoyant force—a force exerted by the surrounding air—pushes the balloon upward, allowing it to float.
Hydrogen, on the other hand, is even lighter than helium and could theoretically make balloons float even higher. However, hydrogen is highly flammable, making it a risky choice. While it was used in the early days of airships, the infamous Hindenburg disaster highlighted its dangers, and helium has since become the safer alternative.
Could you fill a balloon with regular air and expect it to float? Unfortunately, no. Air inside a balloon has the same density as the air outside, so there’s no lift. That’s why balloons filled with air stay earthbound unless you attach them to a stick or string for support.
Other gases, like carbon dioxide or nitrogen, also fail to lift balloons because they’re either denser or only marginally lighter than regular air. The key to a floating balloon is choosing a gas with significantly lower density than air—and helium is the gold standard.
Whether you’re hosting a small gathering or a large event, helium balloons can elevate (literally!) the atmosphere! At Sunny Day Party Art, we specialize in creating stunning balloon decor that floats high and leaves a lasting impression.
