Balloons are the life of the party! They brighten birthdays, weddings, and every celebration in between. But while they’re excellent at setting the mood, balloons are terrible at surviving extreme conditions—especially heat. If you’ve ever wondered whether it’s safe to leave your balloons in a parked car during a hot summer day, here’s the definitive answer: Don’t do it! Here’s why.
Balloons, whether latex or foil, are highly sensitive to temperature changes. When left in a hot car, the intense heat causes the air or helium inside the balloons to expand. This expansion can lead to two unfortunate outcomes:
Helium molecules are already tiny and tend to seep out of balloons over time. In hot conditions, this process speeds up. If your balloons survive the heat without popping, you might still find them looking sad and deflated by the time you return.
Even on a mild day, the temperature inside a parked car can climb rapidly. In direct sunlight, a car’s interior can reach upwards of 120°F (49°C) within minutes. That’s far beyond what most balloons can tolerate!
So, what should you do to keep your balloons looking party-perfect? Follow these tips:
Balloons are awesome for any occasion, but they’re not built to withstand the oven-like conditions of a hot car. To ensure your balloons stay festive and functional, always keep them cool and avoid leaving them unattended in extreme heat. Your party (and your wallet) will thank you!
