Balloon longevity can be confusing to the average person. They seem fragile and you wouldn’t initially think that they would last very long after being blown up. The opposite, in some cases, could not be more true! Air-filled balloons, when kept indoors at room temperature, are very durable and can last sometimes months!
When outside in the cold, (think freezing temperatures), latex balloons will slightly shrink and look droopy while foil balloons will look almost completely deflated in the cold.
When outside in the heat, latex balloons expand and risk popping. When balloons are exposed to warmer sunlight, they also go through a process called oxidation and take on a velvety-matte look to the surface of the balloon. So outside, balloons will last approximately 1-2 days, even less the hotter the temperature is.
But when balloons are inside it is a totally different story. When inside, air-filled latex balloons will last weeks, even months. The closer to room temperature, 60-70 degrees, the better and the longer the balloons will last. Then inside, balloons do not go through oxidation so they will look brand new for even longer. The balloon set up pictured below was in my living room for almost 2 months, and looked just as good as the day I set it up!
